How do police get their criminal intelligence , what is that ?

In an operation carried out by officers from Bedok Police Division and the Criminal Investigation Department on 16 September 2010 , Police arrested two men, aged 51 and 41, who are believed to be syndicate leaders of an unlicensed moneylending business; one of whom was also a part-time polytechnic lecturer.

The arrest came about after two weeks of intensive intelligence gathering and protracted investigation by the officers involved. In the course of the arrest, items such as cash, several mobile phones, laptops, thumb-drives, ATM cards, bank saving books and note books with loan records were seized. Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate has a pool of debtors of about 200 persons.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Ng Boon Gay commended the officers for their efforts in the operation. He added "Police take a serious view of loansharking activities and will continue to come down hard on syndicates who profit from their irresponsible actions at the expense of innocent victims. Let this be a warning to all those who dabble in such illicit activities; the law will catch up with you eventually. "

The two suspects will be charged in Subordinate Court No. 26 on 18 Sep 2010 for operating an unlicensed moneylending business under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010). First time offenders found guilty of conducting unlicensed moneylending activities can be fined up to $300,000 and jailed up to 4 years, and also be liable to caning of up to 6 strokes.
