This short selling ban is, without question, the scariest thing to come out of the whole mess.
And it is not that I don’t have perspective. The meltdown of three bulge bracket I-banks and the largest insurer in the world is pretty damn scary. But at least it wasn’t the government’s doing. You see, I have a far-fetched and unfashionable faith in this whole free-market thing. I realize the effective shutdown of credit and resulting lack of liquidity would have been devastating to the economy, possibly sending us in to depression. But how in the world does the banning of short sales on the stocks of these financial companies promise resolution? (Answer: it doesn’t, but makes the politicians look good)
Here are a few things I know for sure. First, hedge funds now dominate a huge portion of the stock market in this country. In order to hedge, they use short selling. Without the ability to do so – even if only for a limited number of stocks – their portfolios will be in chaos and this is not right.
Second, short selling is not evil. It is necessary. Typically the only ones who ever gripe about it are the ones frustrated their stocks aren’t going up. But even if it were evil, it was the way the game was played up to this point.
Third, if the bulls really were right, then they would eat the shorts’ lunch. The shorts would drive the price down and at some point, I, the fundamental value investor, would say "Holy cow this stock is cheap!" and buy it up. But we can’t do that with the financials because there is a good chance that they really are worthless.
Fourth, the act of the government telling me these stocks are not worthless does not change their intrinsic value.
Maybe there is a legitimate reason. The most logical one is that some short sellers are spreading false rumors. Well, this is called fraud and it's already illegal. If the SEC wants to go after any idiot that may be doing something like this, they can have at it. But banning short selling across the board is not an appropriate reaction. Jim Cramer articulated a different possibility, that short selling is being used as financial terrorism. I guess the theory is that some Middle East terrorist syndicate is coordinating a series of shorts, knowing that it would cause chaos in our markets. I guess that’s plausible.
Most important, though, is that the SEC itself has yet to justify the attack on shorts. I have yet to hear anyone explain how it is the stock prices of the financial firms that threaten the stability of our economy. I would argue that the stock prices, while reflective of the underlying firms, are not the cause of their troubles. The cause of their troubles lies in the credit market, credit default swap market and/or the mortgage backed securities market. But NOT the stock market. In light of this observation, the only conclusion I can draw is that Washington doesn’t want to see stock prices fall, regardless of the underlying fundamentals of the companies behind them. This is not a free market attitude.
Call me ivory-tower, but it was my understanding that short selling helps in this process we call price discovery, the driving force behind the efficiency of the capital markets. Without shorts, one must own the stock to take a bearish position. With it, the bears and the bulls can battle it out and reach a consensus called the market price. The sad truth is, the financial companies whose stock prices are getting hammered have financial statements that nobody trusts, giving the shorts as much justification in betting against them as the longs would have in betting in favor of a stronger company.
Moreover, the inability to short leads to market bubbles – the very problem (albeit in a housing market) that got us in to this mess to begin with. Short sale constraints are the classic limit to arbitrage. If bearish investors can’t take bets to offset the bulls, prices get completely out of whack. For an example of this see my old posting about the Palm/3Com situation from several years ago.
Herein lies the biggest hypocrisy of all; the SEC seeks to thwart stock market manipulation by short sellers, yet by interfering with investors' ability to short the SEC is itself manipulating stock prices far more than any hedge fund could ever hope to. It should be obvious the market’s rally on Thursday was not “hope for a bailout” as the headlines read, but shorts covering before it was too late. Well on Friday morning it was already is too late. The logic behind forcing investors to purchase stocks (cover shorts) at grossly inflated prices could only be understood by Karl Marx himself. These investors can’t even ride it out.Why does everyone hate short sellers?

The spin that masquerades as news is becoming more delusional. Consumer spending is 70% of the US economy. It is the driving force, and it has been shut down. Except for the super rich, there has been no growth in consumer incomes in the 21st century. Statistician John Williams of shadowstats.com reports that real household income has never recovered its pre-2001 peak.
At the urging of Larry Summers and Goldman Sachs鈥? CEO Henry Paulson, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Bush administration went along with removing restrictions on debt leverage.
When the bubble burst, the extraordinary leverage threatened the financial system with collapse. The US Treasury and the Federal Reserve stepped forward with no one knows how many trillions of dollars to "save the financial system," which, of course, meant to save the greed-driven financial institutions that had caused the economic crisis that dispossessed ordinary Americans of half of their life savings.
The unemployment rate, as reported, is a fiction and has been since the Clinton administration. The unemployment rate does not include jobless Americans who have been unemployed for more than a year and have given up on finding work. The reported 10% unemployment rate is understated by the millions of Americans who are suffering long-term unemployment and are no longer counted as unemployed. As each month passes, unemployed Americans drop off the unemployment role due to nothing except the passing of time.
The worst part of the decline is yet to come. Bank failures and home foreclosures are yet to peak. The commercial real estate bust is yet to hit. The dollar crisis is building.

The definition of a recession is two or more consecutive quarters of shrinkage of GDP. A recovery is two consecutive quarters of positive growth of GDP. Most likely after we receive the quarterly report for last quarter of 2009 the recession will be officially over.

Japan is refusing to buy US treasuries unless traded in Yen, HSBC states that the dollar's supremacy is a thing of the past, and the whole group of them are planning to trade in their national currencies until a global monetary system is in place. When the dollar is dumped - probably by the end of the year - it will be known as the Greatest Depression.
I would believe Benake because I have not ever heard him use statistic in a deceptive way but Robert's statement about unemployment vergers on being a lie it is so deceptive. The official unemployment rate is measured the same way now as it was when he was part of the government. The only thing that changed under Clinton is the another measure was also published. Is it legal to use existing names in a pen and paper rulebook i'm helping to write?
I'm partly responsible for the lore and since it is a cyberpunk setting I need names for the various Mega corps. I have thought up some names but after checking the web they already seem to exist in one form or another. Is it for example allowed to take a name like "Eurocorp" or "Intex Systems" and turn it into a banking multinational or a computer firm in the book even though the name is a real life one linked to another organization. I know that Eurocorp was a corporation in the computer game Syndicate and that Intex Systems was part of the game Alien Breed but both do have several real life organizations linked to that name.

I have been doing syndicated loan operation for a while. I am really confused what I can do next.
My duties include: Handling loan drawdowns, rollovers, rate fixings and payments, monitoring loan events on the banks accounting system and resolving loan queries. My bank is just a small bank so I do not have any agent bank role experience.
Is it stupid if I keep staying in the same position? What kind of career path can I have? What can I do to help me find a better job?
I am also not sure if there is any qualification I should take. I am 32 years old already so a wrong qualification might be completely waste of time. I would really appreciate if anyone could give me some advice.

If you have been in your current job for less than 2 years I would stick at it and get some experience behind you. First of all, 170,000 words is a hard, hard sell, especially if you're aiming this thing at the YA market and you don't have a track record already. Lose the line about who it's targeted to.
As for the query itself, you should read it out loud in a hunt for typos. "mandated to find the assassinate to protect national security" (I think you mean "assassin") and "affronting these evils" (I think you mean "confronting"--"affronting" does not mean what you seem to think it means) were two that jumped out at me as I scanned that giant wall o'text. Your query letter should be about a page long and tell the agent who your Character is, what Choices they have to make, and the Consequences of those choices. Lose the paragraph starting with "The Politics of corruption"--the agent doesn't care what inspired you.
Randomly: First sentence, way too long and confusing. In fact, lose the whole first paragraph or incorporate that info into the part where you're talking about the characters. Farther down, "homicidal assassin" is redundant. "Something clicks and changes him"--WHAT clicks and changes him? What's so important that the death of his wife didn't change him but this did?

Interesting question. Everything is interconnected. Some individuals realize this more than others. Money and capitalism are concepts--ideas put into fruition. Money and capitialism are only a part of the picture. *Social constructs* are at the core of many issues institutionalized within our society today. Examples of social constructs include, but are not limited to: human classifications of race, social status, world religion, etc. Bloody disputes over identity,as ethnic clashes, ethnic cleansing, race classification and religion can cause division, poverty and war. When we come to the realization of our commonality and refrain from obsessively focusing on differences, society will be more organized. Then humanity will be unified.
For one, no one understands you non-hierarchical communal federation concept. Except maybe Monty Python.
For another, the world does understand the costs of capitalism, and most capitalist or rather developed nations have social safety nets and rights to housing, clothing etc...
The Amish have sort of done what you are talking about, and the Kibbutz in Israel, I suppose. And many Indian reservations, military units and other 'command economies', like post war Maoism and Leninism, the war planning of the US and UK during WWII, Japan after WWII etc... The characteristic similiar to all of these things is that they have replaced market incentives with other incentive systems - like patriotism, religion, fear.
But none of these systems have been able to develop incentive systems which are consistent with sustained technological growth and complex economic production and distribution of goods and services. This is because no one person or group of persons knows what the appropriate prices and quantities of goods to make. If you have no bankers, how do you decide what products to invest in, what new areas to develop? If you ask me to vote on it, I will likely throw up my arms and say 'who knows - leave it to the bankers'. You could try economic democracy, but then instead of market prices and competition you will have political manipulation and corruption.

You can look throughout the world. In virtually every country poverty is the norm - you have a small ruling class and peasants. It is only in capitalist countries that you have a significant middle class i.e. a group of people who have escaped poverty. They have done this on the back of wealth creation.
Your opinion is naive as it overlooks human nature - the average person is not altruistic (witness those hoarding water in Gloucester today for instance) and will produce more wealth if they realise they will benefit from its creation. Countries modelled on (in theory) altruism i.e. communes/ socialism/communism are notorious for lack of productive capability and creation of wealth.
Finally the creation of wealth is often done by someone going into business - obtaining a loan from the bank to cover start-up costs and only willing to take the risks because they have purchased insurance against major disasters.
No-one is stopping you. If you want to be wealthy get out there and do some work! (And don't approach a bank for a loan because their jobs are pointless)

Your opinion is naive as it overlooks human nature - the average person is not altruistic (witness those hoarding water in Gloucester today for instance) and will produce more wealth if they realise they will benefit from its creation. Finally the creation of wealth is often done by someone going into business - obtaining a loan from the bank to cover start-up costs and only willing to take the risks because they have purchased insurance against major disasters.

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Mets’ owners recently got a $40 million loan to help with cash flow, a year after getting a $25 million loan from Major League Baseball.
The recent loan came in the last six weeks from a major bank and was first reported by The New York Times on Monday.
The Mets have been plagued by the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme and general manager Sandy Alderson has said the team lost $70 million.
The Mets called the recent transaction a “bridge loan” to help them while they seek to sell minority shares of the club.
A statement by the Mets says the latest loan was approved by “Major League Baseball and the syndicate of lenders to the Mets” and that the effort to sell minority shares “continues to go very well.”

The Mets will raise the capital to pay off the loan by selling shares or the bank will be the new owner of the Mets and they'll sell the shares. The Mets have wanted to sell off minority interests, but no one in his right mind wants a minority interest in a private company with no way to sell off that interest in the market place. The Green Bay Packers are selling shares but that is only because Packer fans are willing to spend $250 to say they're an owner. Citibank or Chase are not so sentimental and they're investing more than $250.

I've participated in international tennis tournaments representing my school since Junior year
I've performed in 10 gigs since junior year (as i play the guitar and i've been singing since i was 7), and recorded a demo album of covers.

Hmm...first, realize how insane Ivy acceptances are. A friend of mine worked in MIT admissions, and cautioned me that it's very random. Even if you are highly qualified, that's no guarantee.
That said, you have a lot of incredible things about yourself, and given what you've done in the last two years, I think you definitely have a shot. Use your essay to tell them about your depression and all of your work to get out of it: they like when they can see that people have overcome obstacles.
You could probably see if they want you to participate in a sport--evidently, you're very good at tennis, so maybe you could play tennis for Harvard.

Leong bank, Bank Negara Malaysia and Bukit Aman. I was supposedly involved in money laundering activities. I managed to check with a friend from BNM and the police dept and thus was saved. My main concern is whether I should make a police report as they have all my personal particulars like full name, IC no, h/p no, house phone no and house address. Is it possible for the syndicate to make use of all this info for their illegal activities now or in the future or maybe be robbed? How did they obtain all this info when I've not lost either my IC, Driving licence or passport for the past 3 years? A leading Swedish newspaper reported this week that Israeli soldiers are abducting Palestinians in order to steal their organs, a claim that prompted furious condemnation and accusations of anti-Semitic blood libel from a rival publication.
“They plunder the organs of our sons,” read the headline in Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, the left-leaning Aftonbladet, which devoted a double spread in its cultural section to the article.

The report quotes Palestinian claims that young men from the West Bank and Gaza Strip had been seized by the Israel Defense Forces, and their bodies returned to the families with missing organs.
“‘Our sons are used as involuntary organ donors,’ relatives of Khaled from Nablus said to me, as did the mother of Raed from Jenin as well as the uncles of Machmod and Nafes from Gaza, who all had disappeared for a few days and returned by night, dead and autopsied,” writes author Donald Bostr?m in his report.
Bostr?m’s article makes a link to the recent exposure of an alleged crime syndicate in New Jersey. The syndicate includes several American rabbis, and one Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, who faces charges of conspiring to broker the sale of a human kidney for a transplant.

Bostr?m also cites an incident of alleged organ snatching from 1992, during the time of the first Palestinian intifada. He says that the IDF seized a young man known for throwing stones at Israeli troops in the Nablus area, who was shot in the chest, both legs, and the stomach before being taken to a military helicopter which transported him to “a place unknown to his loved ones”.
Five nights later, Bostr?m says, the young man’s body was returned, wrapped in green hospital sheets.
“The sharp sounds from the shovels were mixed with the occasional laughter from the soldiers who were joking with each other, waiting to go home. When Bilal was put into his grave, his chest was revealed and suddenly it became clear to the present what abuse he had been put through. Bilal was far from the only one who was buried cut-up from his stomach to his chin and the speculations about the reason why had already started,” he writes.
But the liberal Sydsvenskan – southern Sweden’s major daily – had harsh criticism for the rival paper, running an opinion piece under the headline “Antisemitbladet” (a play on the name Aftonbladet).
“We have heard the story before, in one form or the other. It follows the traditional pattern of conspiracy theory: a great number of loose threads that the theorist tempts the reader to tie into a neat knot without having been provided with any proven connection whatsoever,” writes leading columnist Mats Skogk?r of Sydsvenskan.
“Whispers in the dark. Anonymous sources. Rumors. That is all it takes. After all we all know what they [the Jews] are like, don’t we: inhuman, hardened. Capable of anything,” the opinion piece says. “Now all that remains is the defense, equally predictable: ‘Anti-Semitism’ No, no, just criticism of Israel.”
The Foreign Ministry reacted angrily on Tuesday to the report. Ministry spokesperson Yigal Palmor said the newspaper’s decision to publish the story is “a mark of disgrace” for the Swedish press.
“In a democratic country, there should be no place for dark blood libels out of the Middle Ages of this type,” Palmor said. “This is an article that shames Swedish democracy and the entire Swedish press.”
A Foreign Ministry official said that Israel’s embassy in Stockholm have communicated a harsh condemnation to the Swedish government and the newspaper itself.

A Swedish newspaper provoked outrage in Israel and drew condemnation from Sweden’s ambassador on Wednesday after it ran a story on transplant organ theft, a report an Israeli official branded anti-Semitic “hate porn”.
The editor of Aftonbladet, Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, hit back hard, at both Israel and at the Swedish envoy for attacking his paper’s coverage.
Donald Bostr?m, the Swedish journalist whose article accusing Israel Defense Forces soldiers of killing Palestinians to obtain their organs evoked outrage, denied on Tuesday that he was motivated by anti-Semitism.
“I’m very sad to hear people accuse me of anti-Semitism,” Bostr?m told Haaretz on Tuesday.
Aftonbladet, ran Bostrom’s piece under the headline, “They plunder the organs of our sons”. “‘Our sons are used as involuntary organ donors,’ relatives of Khaled from Nablus said to me, as did the mother of Raed from Jenin as well as the uncles of Machmod and Nafes from Gaza, who all had disappeared for a few days and returned by night, dead and autopsied,” writes author Donald Bostr?m in his report.
Bostr?m’s article makes a link to the recent exposure of an alleged crime syndicate in New Jersey. The syndicate includes several American rabbis, and one Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, who faces charges of conspiring to broker the sale of a human kidney for a transplant.

Bostr?m also cites an incident of alleged organ snatching from 1992, during the time of the first Palestinian intifada. He says that the IDF seized a young man known for throwing stones at Israeli troops in the Nablus area, who was shot in the chest, both legs, and the stomach before being taken to a military helicopter which transported him to “a place unknown to his loved ones”.
Five nights later, Bostr?m says, the young man’s body was returned, wrapped in green hospital sheets.
“The sharp sounds from the shovels were mixed with the occasional laughter from the soldiers who were joking with each other, waiting to go home. When Bilal was put into his grave, his chest was revealed and suddenly it became clear to the present what abuse he had been put through. Bilal was far from the only one who was buried cut-up from his stomach to his chin and the speculations about the reason why had already started,” he writes.
But the liberal Sydsvenskan – southern Sweden’s major daily – had harsh criticism for the rival paper, running an opinion piece under the headline “Antisemitbladet” (a play on the name Aftonbladet).
“We have heard the story before, in one form or the other. It follows the traditional pattern of conspiracy theory: a great number of loose threads that the theorist tempts the reader to tie into a neat knot without having been provided with any proven connection whatsoever,” writes leading columnist Mats Skogk?r of Sydsvenskan.
“Whispers in the dark. Anonymous sources. Rumors. That is all it takes. After all we all know what they [the Jews] are like, don’t we: inhuman, hardened. Capable of anything,” the opinion piece says. “Now all that remains is the defense, equally predictable: ‘Anti-Semitism’ No, no, just criticism of Israel.”
The Foreign Ministry reacted angrily on Tuesday to the report. Ministry spokesperson Yigal Palmor said the newspaper’s decision to publish the story is “a mark of disgrace” for the Swedish press.
“In a democratic country, there should be no place for dark blood libels out of the Middle Ages of this type,” Palmor said. “This is an article that shames Swedish democracy and the entire Swedish press.”
A Foreign Ministry official said that Israel’s embassy in Stockholm have communicated a harsh condemnation to the Swedish government and the newspaper itself.

Swedish daily hits back at critics of IDF organ harvest story

A Swedish newspaper provoked outrage in Israel and drew condemnation from Sweden’s ambassador on Wednesday after it ran a story on transplant organ theft, a report an Israeli official branded anti-Semitic “hate porn”.
The editor of Aftonbladet, Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, hit back hard, at both Israel and at the Swedish envoy for attacking his paper’s coverage.
Donald Bostr?m, the Swedish journalist whose article accusing Israel Defense Forces soldiers of killing Palestinians to obtain their organs evoked outrage, denied on Tuesday that he was motivated by anti-Semitism.
“I’m very sad to hear people accuse me of anti-Semitism,” Bostr?m told Haaretz on Tuesday.
